About Freshwater
Freshwater is located 17 kilometres north-east of the Sydney central business district, in the Northern Beaches region. In 2003 the Harbord Chamber of Commerce submitted a request to Warringah Council to support an application to rename the suburb of Harbord to Freshwater.
The area was once home to the Kuring-gai Indigenous people and evidence of their habitation remains in the form of rock engravings, open campsites, and rock shelters.
Freshwater Beach lies between Curl Curl and Queenscliff on the Manly to Curl Curl Beach walk and is known as the Australian home of surfing. Freshwater is part of the Manly-Freshwater National and World Surfing Reserve that recognises the historical, cultural and environmental values of famous surfing beaches. It is where Duke Kahanamoku held his famous 1915 surfing demonstration that popularised surfing in Australia. Duke was the world sprint swimming champion from Honolulu, and was touring Australia when he introduced Hawaiian style longboard surfing at Freshwater Beach. His visit forms part of the rich history and surfing culture of the Freshwater area. The board he used is kept on display in the Freshwater Surf Life Saving Club and there is a statue of Duke on the headland at Freshwater. In 2012, Warringah Council in partnership with Freshwater Surf Life Saving Club signed a Goodwill Beach City Agreement with the coastal community of Waikiki in Honolulu, Hawaii.
The Harbord Beach Hotel, which opened in 1928, is 200 metres from the beach and is known to locals as the "Harbord Hilton", due to its state of disrepair prior to renovations. Harbord Diggers Club is a popular venue with locals and tourists for its superb bowling greens and views of the ocean.

Residents love living in Freshwater due to its proximity to the Sydney CBD along with the abundance of natural beauty, including Freshwater Beach, Freshwater Rockpool, and Freshwater View Reserve. The Reserve is situated on the northern side of Queenscliff Headland and offers beautiful views over Freshwater Beach. It is a popular spot for picnics and is a short picturesque walk from either Queenscliff or Freshwater Beaches.
